Adams County selected G2 and a team of consultants to undertake the development of a new animal shelter.  This was an essential project for the most rapidly growing county in the state, due to the inadequacies of the existing shelter.  Poor location, difficult maintenance requirements, and a low employee and volunteer retention rate hinder the facility’s ability to achieve its goals for animal and community welfare.  The new 45,000 sf shelter is currently under development at its location within the Adams County Regional Park.  $27.5m was budgeted for this project in order to develop a facility that supports current sheltering standards, as well as lay the groundwork for the development of the south half of the Regional Park.  The vision for the park is to be a Science and Culture center for the county, becoming home to future SCFD partner facilities.  The animal shelter design needed to link the agricultural heritage of the county with the new vision for the park.  The design team developed a facility based on a contemporary agricultural aesthetic precedent.   This was realized through the use of traditional agricultural forms and site layout, with the use of more contemporary materials and fenestration.  The building becomes an icon on the site, while serving the shelter function in the best ways possible.
